A healthy workplace: cleaning in five steps

Cleaning is only noticed when it does not happen. Here is how to keep the standard up at the office.

Clean is more pleasant to work in, and it cuts absence

A clean working environment is more than a tidy impression for visitors. Dust, dirt and bacteria building up on contact points have a direct effect on how pleasant and how healthy people find their work.

1. Record what happens when

A work programme prevents discussion. What is daily, what is weekly, what is periodic. Everyone then knows what to expect and it is obvious straight away if something is left undone.

2. Contact points daily

Door handles, light switches, handrails, coffee machines and keyboards are where most transfer happens. They belong in the daily round, even if the rest still looks clean.

3. Work with a fixed team

A fixed team knows the building, knows where the problem areas are and therefore works faster. For your staff it is also nicer to see familiar faces.

4. Do not forget the floor

The floor is the largest surface in the building and strongly determines the impression. Alongside the daily round it needs periodic maintenance, otherwise dirt works into the top layer and the damage is permanent.

5. Evaluate and adjust

Situations change: a refurbishment, more staff, different use of the space. Go through the programme a few times a year and adjust it.
